Trails and Outdoor Spaces

Stretch your legs and lace up your sneakers! Our grounds have more than two miles of trails, wetlands, paved pathways, thick woodlands, and an expansive meadow for visitors to explore and enjoy. Don’t skip the waterfall, located along the Reynolda Village trail. Dogs are welcome on the grounds of Reynolda everywhere except the Formal Gardens, but must be leashed.

Lake Katharine Wetland and the Boathouse

Lake Katharine was the most prominent feature of the Reynolda landscape when the Reynolds family moved into their bungalow in 1917. The man-made, 16-acre lake was dredged up for the first time in 1924—11 years after its creation. In the 1950s, runoff from the construction of Wake Forest University’s new Winston-Salem campus filled the lake again. Today, the area serves as valuable wetlands and a natural history classroom.

Built before January 1913, the boathouse designed by Charles Barton Keen still stands and serves as the Boathouse Education Center for children’s educational programs.

This photograph of Lake Katharine was published in the October 1917 issue of House Beautiful. The original caption read, “Sixty thousand daffodil bulbs were naturalized around this lake, and in blooming time the place is thronged with visitors. In the distance, spot the boathouse and bungalow.”
